Eliminate all sugar and sugar substitutes

Why are we told over and over to eliminate sugar from our diets? Besides being bad for you in so many ways, sugar distorts our palate. In other words if we are use to eating sugary foods all the time our mouth won't recognize the naturally sweet foods mother nature made for us. Fresh strawberries and grapefruit will taste bitter and your desire for a slice of pie wins over a crisp fresh apple. Not to say that we can't have these treats every now and then, we just can't overdo it. Sugar is put in everything from canned kidney beans to corn! Read labels, not just the nutritional information section but the ingredients. If it shows sugar, raw sugar, granulated sugar, brown sugar, powdered sugar, turbinado sugar, evaporated cane juice, sucrose, dextrose, corn syrup, corn sweetener then don't buy it.

Did you know that sugar requires B vitamins and other nutrients in order to digest in our body. The very thing you crave is what is robbing you of precious vitamins! Well I'll just take more B vitamins. Not so fast. Sugar does more damage to our bodies than we realize. After we eat sugar, the body produces more insulin and your cravings get worse and you want more sugar - a vicious cycle. The increased insulin in our body raises our cholesterol and promotes the storage of fat. You don't want that do you?

So why do I want sugar and/or food all the time, I'm constantly hungry?

All diseases aside (except diabetes) your food cravings are largely based on the fact that you are eating empty calories if you are eating things with sugar in them and other junk foods on a continual basis. Your body is being drained of vitamins and pulls them from your system. Because of this drain your body is signaling the brain to SEND MORE FOOD. See our Nutritional Counseling section for more information on a nutritious diet. Aside from all the bad things you have now heard about sugar there is one more reason to eliminate it from your diet....... it ages you!

Go here for more information to help you determine which natural sweeteners to use. They process differently in your body. Some will raise blood sugar as much as if not more than refined white sugar so be careful. Just because it is natural does not mean you can eat it with reckless abandonment J

Stevia is an herb used in South America for hundreds of years. Check out the website for more information on the natural sweetener used. Stevia helps the pancreas release insulin - helpful for diabetics.

Did you know that Nutra-Sweet turns to formaldehyde in the body? Did you also know that this poison does NOT help you lose weight but actually in some cases may make you gain weight? If you have been having too many headaches and can't find the reason why, try eliminating this poison from your diet completely.

Avoid processed food as much as possible.

If you must eat bread make sure it is whole grain and not just brown or wheat bread. Read the ingredients label on the package (not the nutritional information section). Make sure it says 100% whole grain. We recommend Ezekiel Bread produced with live grains and without flour. Food for Life

NOTE: Some people have allergic reaction to wheat and should eliminate it from their diet. Allergies include, but are not limited to: Asthma, eczema, shortness of breath, diarrhea, constipation, sinusitis, headache, and fatigue. Here are a few websites for more information on wheat allergies:

If you buy rice use brown rice instead of white rice. (If you must use white rice pick basmati.) Brown rice has more fiber and nutrition than white rice and tastes better too. Brown basmati rice has a wonderful flavor and takes about 40 minutes to prepare. You can make a big batch and store in the refrigerator for up to a week. Brown rice vs white rice and more information on all kinds of rice from DDInternational

As a rule of thumb avoid anything white (or beige). This is easy to remember. If you think of all the foods this color they are usually not that healthy for you. They have been bleached and most of the nutrients have been taken out by processing. This is done in order to make the processing easier on the manufacturer, as in the case of bread the most nutritious part, wheat germ is removed. Then they happily tell you they have added a fraction of nutrients and call it enriched. There are so many healthy nutrients in whole grains that removing them all and then adding in only a few is the equivalent of someone asking you to change a dollar and you give them a couple of nickels and dimes in return!

Avoid Soy

Oh no, soy is supposed to be good for me. Why should I stop using it?

First of all soy robs the body of calcium and other important minerals. Secondly, most people don't process soy well in their body and it creates gas. Third, most people don't realize that soy is an allergen and can cause severe allergic reactions in some people just like peanuts. Fourth, it is not to be eaten by those persons who already are hypothyroid as it can suppress thyroid function. And the list goes on.

Soy is in everything now from margarine to canned tuna. Worst of all it is disguised on the food label as natural flavor, textured vegetable protein (TVP), hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP), or the more recognized monosodium glutamate (MSG) just to name a few. If you are not sure what a particular food item is on the ingredient list then don't buy it until you can contact the manufacturer or find out more about it.

Soy is not the magic potion for curing man's - or woman's - ills as once thought to be. You should NEVER feed soy to infants or even those people suffering from intolerance to wheat as it can cause the same complications as celiac disease aka wheat intolerance. Although well absorbed by babies, soy infant formula causes a rise of levels of serum estrogen of between 13,000 - 22,000 times the amount of those infants fed milk based formula or breast fed. What does that mean? Risk of cancer from elevated estrogen levels, growth retardation, disturbing emotional behavior and earlier than normal puberty are just a few of the complications one might expect. Read about soy infant formula being under investigation.

Avoid Canola Oil

Avoid canola oil? But I thought it was healthy?

The truth is you have been mislead. Canola oil is derived from the rapeseed plant, the mustard seed family. It is the most toxic of all oil derived plants. It is nothing more than a weed and deadly for human consumption. It was originally used as a lubricant in industrial machines, as fuel, soap and as a synthetic rubber base. It is the shiny part you see on magazine photos.

The original name for this poisonous oil was rape oil. It was first produced in Canada and after it was processed using irradiation (genetic engineering) it was renamed Canola Oil (Canadian Oil).

Canola oil contains large amounts of "isothiocyanates" - cyanide-containing compounds. This is especially bad for people with hypothyroid conditions as it prevents iodine uptake in the body and is one of many "foods" that should not be consumed by the hypothyroid patient.

Virtually every product on the market today, whether it be in a supermarket or health food store carries the ingredient Canola Oil. It is a cheap oil that is why they use it. It is becoming harder to find any foods without it. So what is a person to do? You can make your own mayonnaise using olive oil and just search out the products that do NOT contain the deadly Canola Oil. This may mean giving up most of the products you so dearly love. Most people are ignorant to the fact that just because the product has been deemed safe by an agency it is supposed to be good for you, or at least not harmful. After all, they are the same agencies that told us Vioxx was ok!

Mainstream medicine will tell you there is nothing wrong with Canola Oil and that it is a myth that it is bad for you. Well the reason you are here in the first place is because you want answers that mainstream medicine just can't give you. Practically every holistic website has some reference to the dangers of Canola Oil.

Here are more links to the harm that Canola Oil can do:

List of other oils to avoid:

  • All hydrogenated oils
  • Soy, corn, safflower, peanut and cottonseed oils
  • All fats heated to very high temperatures in processing and frying

Good Fats - What are they?

So what kind of oils do I use? Oils that are high in Omega 3 fatty acids and cold pressed oils that don't use heat or chemicals to extract the oil from the seed, that don't use bleach to deodorize, and those found in dark colored containers so light won't destroy the nutrients and cause them to go rancid. Also find your Flax Oil from the refrigerated section of the health food store.

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Virgin Coconut Oil
  • Walnut Oil
  • Sesame Oil
  • Butter
  • Flax Oil (not for heating - add to protein drinks & salads)
  • Fish Oil - Carlson's is best

Cooking oil produced today is a far cry from what our grandparents used. It has been heated, chemicals added, bleached and hydrogenated. At the turn of the century, 1900 that is, fats like Flax, Coconut, Cod Liver and butter were found abundant on grocery shelves. With the coming of World War 2 and rationing we replaced butter with the new kid on the block, margarine. We replaced the wonderful Omega 3 benefits of Cod Liver Oil with canola oil and soy oil and the cheap cottonseed oil.

It's no wonder why, in the last 30-50 years degenerative diseases are more prevalent than ever - heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, depression, hyperactivity or ADHD in children, obesity, Alzheimer's and diabetes. Prescription drugs used to treat depression have increased 300% in the last 10 years. More and more cases of ADHD in children and Alzheimer's in adults are cropping up and the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes is out of control. We have been on the low-fat no-fat bandwagon for almost 20 years now and where has it gotten us? More obesity, especially in children than ever before. Cutting out the fat in our diet isn't the answer, cutting the wrong fat out of your diet is.

Your body needs fat to operate, like a well-oiled piece of machinery. It needs fat for the brain, fat for the joints, fat to metabolize the foods slowly in our system to maintain an even blood sugar level, fat for energy and fat to help us keep satiated so we won't get constant hunger pangs. Besides being good for you, fat in the diet actually helps you lose weight.

A low fat diet is a big fat lie - read more by Dr. Lam

Why Choose Organic?

People can lower their exposure to pesticides by 90 percent by avoiding the top 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables and replacing them with the least contaminated or buying organic when possible - see the top 12 contaminated produce Food Guide to Pesticides in Produce  The site has a handy wallet guide you can download and take with you to the store.

Washing your fruits and vegetables will reduce the residue but NOT eliminate them. Washing should always been done regardless of whether the produce is organic or not. Always wash any fruit or vegetable, even if you are not eating the outside. When sliced, the outside of unwashed produce can contaminate the inside portion that you are eating. Vegetable and fruit "sprays" are available at most supermarkets and are formulated to remove wax, oily pesticides and soil & chemicals.

Metabolic Imbalances

So far, we know of ten ways that the body's chemistry can go out of balance. These imbalances are divided into five pairs. The first was discovered in the early 1900s, the last in the 1950s and 1960s. These imbalances are very common, and most people who are chronically unwell have at least one of them. Correcting them usually results in major improvements in health. For a more complete understanding of the subject of correcting metabolic imbalances, the book An Analytical System of Clinical Nutrition, third edition by Dr. Schenker is excellent. Doctors can order the book at 800-736-4320 and you can ask for the name of a doctor near you who can do the test by calling the same number.

An overview of the imbalances:

Electrolyte stress
These people have excess electrolyte salts - more than the kidneys are able to get rid of. The blood is beginning to "sludge," the kidneys are stressed, and the blood pressure is higher than normal. Heart disease is on the way (if not already there). The person urgently needs to drink more pure water - one ounce for every two pounds of body weight per day (if the kidneys are still able to handle it). They also benefit from taking certain supplements.

Electrolyte insufficiency
With electrolyte insufficiency, the person does not have adequate salts (chlorides, phosphates, etc.) in their body. They have low blood pressure, so that there is not enough blood movement to take nutrients to cells or to carry waste materials away. They have very low energy, and other health problems. They need kidney and adrenal support along with certain electrolytes.

Anaerobic imbalance
This imbalance, also called the "anabolic imbalance," is a bit more complicated. There are two main parts to it. First, there is an inability to use adequate oxygen in producing energy. Instead of combining glucose with oxygen to produce energy, glucose is fermented by the cells and lactic acid is produced. This is not an efficient way to make energy, and fatigue results. The other factor is that there is too much of the sterol fats (such as cholesterol) and not enough fatty acids in the cell membranes, with the result that cell walls are not permeable enough. This common imbalance is the chemistry of many cancers, osteoarthritis, and many other health problems. Other common symptoms include high blood pressure, constipation, irregular heart rate, sleepiness during the day, pain, elevated cholesterol, and allergies. Treatment includes a diet low in saturated fats, sugar and caffeine, with specific vitamin, mineral, amino acid, and glandular supplements that correct the chemistry.

Disaerobic imbalance
The disaerobic (or "catabolic") imbalance is the opposite of the anaerobic imbalance. Oxygen metabolism goes too far, producing free radicals but little energy. Cell membranes contain too much fatty acids and are too permeable. Apart from fatigue, common symptoms include migraines and other pain, colitis, diarrhea, hypoglycemia, insomnia, allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, many cancers, elevated cholesterol, and many other health problems. Treatment includes appropriate supplements along with a diet low in polyunsaturated vegetable oils and fried foods.

Glucogenic imbalance
Those with a glucogenic imbalance have also been called "fast oxidizers." They tend to use up carbohydrates (starches and sugars) too fast, and they have difficulty using fat for energy, so they often have a hypoglycemia slump after lunch, or may sometimes even wake up at 2:00 am because of hypoglycemia. Common symptoms include fatigue, high or low blood sugar, depression or anxiety, high cholesterol levels, weight problems (either over weight or under weight), and many other health problems. These people need to keep their protein intake up, avoid excess carbohydrates, excess B vitamins, stay away from sugars, alcohol, and caffeine, and take a supplement combination that speeds up fat metabolism.

Ketogenic imbalance
Unlike the glucogenic "fast oxidizers," the ketogenic or "slow oxidizers" have difficulty using carbohydrates for fuel. What little energy they can make is mostly from fat. Symptoms commonly include fatigue, high or low blood sugar, depression or anxiety, over weight or under weight, and other health problems. Those with a ketogenic imbalance need to avoid excess carbohydrates, organ meats, and peanuts. Their supplement speeds up carbohydrate metabolism.

Sympathetic stress
The autonomic nerves, sympathetic and parasympathetic, help regulate body functions over which we do not have conscious control, such as heart rate and digestion. In general, sympathetic nerves speed up the activity of the organs needed for a "fight-or-flight" response. If you are driving along, and someone pulls out in front of you, you slam on the brakes, your skin goes pale, your heart pounds, your pupils and bronchial tubes dilate, your palms may get sweaty, your digestion slows down, and so on. This is the sympathetic half of the autonomic nervous system in action. In sympathetic stress, a person is "stuck" in this sympathetic reaction. There may be high or low blood sugar, low energy, digestive problems, nervous tension, insomnia, poor circulation, high blood pressure, food allergies, and other health problems. To correct sympathetic stress, eat lots of vegetables, avoid concentrated sugars, caffeine-like chemicals (coffee, tea, chocolate, and colas) and pop that contains phosphoric acid, and take a supplement combination that reduces sympathetic response while increasing parasympathetic response.

Parasympathetic stress
Parasympathetic stress is the opposite to sympathetic stress. Parasympathetic nerves slow things down after the crisis has passed, and stimulate the digestive tract to work again. The blood returns to the skin, heart rate slows, respiratory rate slows, pupils and bronchial tubes constrict, and so on. In a parasympathetic stress, the parasympathetic nerves are over-reactive, and the person is "stuck" in this mode. Common symptoms include high or low blood sugar, digestive problems, arthritis, poor circulation, nervous tension, depression, asthma, and allergies. In fact, all asthma patients that benefit from the use of inhalers are stuck in parasympathetic stress - asthma medications speed up sympathetic activity and slow down parasympathetic activity. To correct the imbalance, avoid sugars, fruit juices, large quantities of fruit, and meals that are mostly starch or sugars. A supplement combination is also used which corrects the chemistry.

Acid imbalances
There are three kinds of acid imbalance where there is too much acid and not enough alkali built up in the body. It is interesting that in one kind of acid imbalance, both the urine and saliva are alkaline! This often results in poor digestion and assimilation, joint and muscle pain, rapid heart beat, allergies, fatigue, and poor function of various glands and organs. Treatment includes a diet low in fat, fruit, and soft drinks, with an increase in pure water intake. Various supplements are used depending on the type of imbalance.

Alkaline imbalances
There are also three alkaline imbalances, where there is too much alkali and not enough acid in the body. In one of the alkaline imbalances, the urine can be either acid or alkaline. Common symptoms include poor digestion and assimilation, joint and muscle pain, allergies fatigue, and poor function of various glands and organs. Treatment includes a diet low in sugars, starches, and fruit, with an increase in pure water intake. Antacids make this imbalance worse. Various supplements are used depending on the type of imbalance.

Testing for metabolic imbalances:

Preparation for the test
The person being tested abstains from eating or chewing gum for thirty minutes before the test. Coffee, tea, chocolate, carbonated beverages, vitamins, minerals, herbs, and non-prescription medications (such as pain killers) are avoided for at least 24 hours before the test. Even one cup of coffee the day of the test will result in altered chemistry. The person will appear more anaerobic, sympathetic, and possibly more glucogenic than they really are. When possible, testing is done just before prescription medications are taken rather than just after. The goal is to find out, as much as practical, what the person's chemistry is like when it is left alone. The person is not, however, asked to stop taking their prescription medications. An intake form, metabolic screening questionnaire (a symptom survey), and a disbiosis questionnaire (questions related to the damage that may have been done to the person's normal intestinal flora) may be filled out. A sheet of instructions for measuring the person's morning underarm temperature (an indication of metabolic rate) may be given to them.

Collecting the information:

Urine chemistry
A fresh urine sample is collected in a new disposable cup. The surface tension is measured using a urotensiometer and recorded. Then an Ames Multistix 10 SG or N-Multistix SG strip is dipped into the sample. The urine pH and specific gravity are recorded along with any other findings. The oxidation index is calculated using the surface tension and specific gravity.
Saliva pH
A strip of pH paper is moistened with saliva and the result is recorded. Hydration index
The saliva pH and specific gravity are used to calculate the hydration index. This is used to give an idea of hydration status.
Other tests

The person being tested lies on their back for the next few tests. This test is called "dermographic lines." Using a blunt instrument (the 5mm round ball on the top of a four-color Bic pen is just right - if any burrs are polished off first!) an "X" is drawn on the skin each side of the navel using firm pressure, and the time is noted. The lines may turn either red or white. If the lines fade and disappear in less than one minute, a zero is recorded. If, after one minute, the lines are white, "white" is recorded. If the lines are red, "red" is recorded. The gag reflex is tested by sliding a finger (covered with a new latex glove) along the top and edge of the tongue half way toward the back of the throat to where the oral area narrows. A slight tendency to gag is a zero response. Either discomfort or lack of discomfort with no gag is a negative response. A gag is a positive response. The person being tested is instructed to look up at the ceiling. The pupil size is recorded on a scale from -4 (very small) to +4 (very large). The respiratory rate is counted and recorded. The pulse is counted for 15 seconds, and the result is multiplied by 4 and recorded. The reclining blood pressure is taken and recorded. The person being tested is asked to stand. After waiting for 5 seconds the pulse is counted for 15 seconds and again for 15 seconds. Both numbers are multiplied by 4 and recorded. The standing blood pressure and another pulse are taken and recorded. (There are now two blood pressures and four sets pulses recorded.) The person being tested is asked to sit down. They are then asked to "Take a deep breath, and hold it as long as you can." The result, in seconds, is recorded.

Evaluating the results:

General notes
The imbalances are presented in decreasing order of importance - the most important are covered here first. There are some general suggestions regardless of what imbalance may be found. For general dietary guidelines see the zone.
Avoid junk food - things made in factories. Chemically altered (hydrogenated) oils, or oils that have been heated to high temperatures, white flour products (like pasta), white rice, refined sugar, caffeine, and so on.

Water. If you have good spring or well water available, that is ideal. Tap water, in most places, is a major problem. Chlorine can easily be removed with a cheap carbon type filter. Fluoride is a bit more difficult. Reverse osmosis, de-ionization, and distillation are the main choices. Those processes take out most everything, so trace minerals such as Concentrace can be added back. High dose B-complex supplements make certain imbalances worse, or can even create imbalances. Vitamins and minerals have powerful effects on a person's chemistry, and it is not uncommon for these supplements to push a person from one imbalance into the opposite imbalance fairly quickly.

Electrolyte stress
Signs of electrolyte stress will include at least two of the following:

1. At least one of the standing pulses at least 12 points higher than the resting pulse. (This is called "clinostatic pulse increase.")

2. Standing diastolic blood pressure of 88 or more.

3. Systolic blood pressure of 131 or more. If the person is being medicated for high blood pressure you can assume that they have electrolyte stress even if test results to not confirm it (medication is suppressing the symptoms). Pure water - 1/2 ounce per day per pound of body weight (maximum of 10 cups) if the kidneys can tolerate that much. If there is any question, the person is in poor health, or receiving medical care, they should ask their physician how much they can tolerate. In any case, if increased water intake does not result in increased urine output, water intake should be immediately reduced and a physician consulted. For more information on this subject, see the book Your Body's Many Cries for Water by F. Batmanghelidj, M.D. The first 2-3 cups of water should be on an empty stomach before breakfast. Aluminum is a major cause of electrolyte stress and must be avoided. It is often found in table salt, antiperspirants, pop cans, cookware, many antacids, and so on. If the person wants to lose weight, they can consider the zone diet.

Electrolyte insufficiency
Signs of electrolyte insufficiency will include at least three of the following:

1. At least one of the standing pulses at least 12 points higher than the reclining pulse.

2. Standing diastolic blood pressure of 72 or less.

3. Reclining blood pressure of 112 or less.

4. Reclining pulse of 70 or less. The person may have to increase their salt intake (using Real Salt or similar unrefined product with no aluminum added). Salt, by the way, is not the "bad guy" that you may have heard that it is. The sodium level on blood tests gives an accurate picture of body levels. If the sodium is below the middle of the normal range, sodium is actually depleted from the body - a common but dangerous situation. There are a dozen other supplements that can be used depending on the oxidation index and other test results. If the person wants to lose weight, they can consider the zone diet.

Anaerobic (anabolic) imbalance
The signs of an anaerobic imbalance are: Urine surface tension of 69 or more, oxidation index of -7 or lower, adjusted urine pH of 6.3 or more, adjusted saliva pH of 6.6 or less, and red dermographics. If there is an anaerobic imbalance, there will be either a high surface tension or low oxidation index and at least two other items. Taurine, methionine and tyrosine can also be added depending on symptoms. The person should avoid sugars, coffee, tea, chocolate, cola beverages and saturated fat from fatty beef and dairy fat. If the person wants to lose weight, they can consider the zone diet.

Disaerobic (catabolic) imbalance
Signs of a disaerobic imbalance are: Urine surface tension of 67 or less, oxidation index of 8 or more, adjusted urine pH of 6.1 or less, adjusted saliva pH of 6.8 or more, and white dermographics. If there is a disaerobic imbalance, there will be either a low surface tension or a high oxidation index and at least two other items. Glutamine, histidine, or glucosamine sulfate can be added depending on symptoms. The person should avoid polyunsaturated vegetable oils, hydrogenated oils, margarine (of course), deep fried and even pan fried foods, and canned meat and fish (oils heated to high temperatures). If the person wants to lose weight, they can consider the zone diet.

Glucogenic and ketogenic imbalances
Determining whether or not there is a glucogenic (fast oxidizer) or ketogenic (slow oxidizer) imbalance has in the past been a challenge for doctors. One method previously developed required that the pH of a venous blood sample be accurately measured to 2 places beyond the decimal without the sample coming into contact with air. This test is beyond the capability of most clinics, or even most hospitals. Many doctors gave up even trying to test for these imbalances. The method developed by Dr. Guy Schenker is to compare the adjusted saliva pH (A-SpH) with the respiratory rate (RR), breath hold (BH, and fourth pulse (P4). This method works very well. See An Analytical System of Clinical Nutrition for details. The glucogenic person needs to keep their protein intake up, keep the sugar intake down, and not eat meals that are mostly starch or sugar. Caffeine, fruit juices and even large amounts of fruit should be avoided. Onions, peppers, tomatoes and sweet potatoes also make the imbalance worse. Proteins along with non-starchy vegetables should make up much of the diet. For this person to eat a big plate of pasta could be compared to fueling a wood stove with gasoline. Not a wise choice! For more information on diet, see the zone. The ketogenic person should avoid foods which make their imbalance worse - sugars, fruit juices, meals which are mostly starch or sugars, organ meats, shrimp, lobster, clams and peanuts. If the person wants to lose weight, they can consider the zone diet.

Sympathetic stress
Sympathetic test results include large pupil size, standing systolic blood pressure of 5 or more than reclining, standing diastolic blood pressure 6 or more than reclining, fourth pulse 12 or more than the reclining pulse, white dermographics, fourth pulse of 80+, first pulse 73+, when the standing systolic blood pressure is divided by 10 and subtracted from the respiratory rate, the answer is 3-, and reduced gag reflex. If a person tests both glucogenic and sympathetic, you should not try to correct both. It is important to eat lots of vegetables at 2 meals a day, and avoid sugars, caffeine (coffee, tea, chocolate, cola beverages, etc.) and soft drinks that contain phosphoric acid (such as colas). If they have asthma, they actually have parasympathetic stress - the sympathetic stress is almost certainly caused by their medications and must not be treated. If the person wants to lose weight, they can consider the zone diet.

Parasympathetic stress
Parasympathetic test results include small pupil size, standing systolic blood pressure increase of 3-, standing diastolic blood pressure increase of 4-, fourth pulse increase of 8- compared to the reclining pulse, red dermographics, fourth pulse of 75-, first pulse 63-, when the standing systolic blood pressure is divided by 10 and subtracted from the respiratory rate, the answer is 5+, and increased gag reflex. If a person appears to be both ketogenic and parasympathetic, you should not try to correct both. The person also needs to keep their protein intake adequate - see the zone diet for more details. They need to avoid sugars, fruit juices, large amounts of fresh fruit, and meals that are mostly starches or sugars. If they have asthma, they almost certainly have parasympathetic stress even though they may test sympathetic due to their medications. They may also appear to have respiratory acidosis. This must never be treated as this would make their plight worse.

Acid imbalances
Acid imbalances are often a result of imbalances discussed above. In acid imbalances, the respiratory rate is generally 19 or more. The one exception is with respiratory acidosis with high blood pressure where the respiratory rate may be reduced. The breath hold tends to be 40 or less. When the breath hold is divided by 5 and the result is subtracted from the respiratory rate, the result is usually 10 or more. With metabolic acidosis, the adjusted urine pH is usually 5.9-, adjusted saliva pH is usually 6.8+. The first pulse is usually 75+, and the pulse increase from pulse 1 to pulse 4 is usually 10 or more. With potassium excess acidosis, the adjusted urine pH is usually 6.3+, adjusted saliva pH is usually 6.8+. The pulse increase from pulse 1 to pulse 4 is usually 10 or more. It is interesting that we can have an acidosis with an alkaline urine - the kidneys are dumping excess potassium and thus save hydrogen (acid). So we have an acid condition with alkaline (high pH) urine!
With respiratory acidosis, the adjusted urine pH is usually 5.9-, adjusted saliva pH is usually 6.6-. The first pulse is usually 75+, and the pulse increase from pulse 1 to pulse 4 is usually 10 or more.

Alkaline imbalances
Alkaline imbalances are often a result of imbalances discussed above. In alkaline imbalances, the respiratory rate is generally 13 or less. The one exception is with respiratory alkalosis where the respiratory rate may be increased. The breath hold tends to be 65 or more. When the breath hold is divided by 5 and the result is subtracted from the respiratory rate, the result is usually 5 or less. With metabolic alkalosis, the adjusted urine pH is usually 6.3+, and the adjusted saliva pH is usually 6.6-. The first pulse is usually 67-. With potassium depletion alkalosis, the adjusted saliva pH is usually 6.8+. The first pulse is usually 67-. The urine can be acid (low pH) in this alkalosis, by the way, because there is a potassium shortage, and the kidneys save potassium and dump hydrogen ions (acid) instead. So we have an alkalosis with an acid urine! Treating acid and alkaline imbalances. Treating these imbalances is a bit complex. See An Analytical System of Clinical Nutrition for details.

The Zone
Introduction: There is considerable evidence that obesity is a glandular problem. We all know people who can eat very large amounts of high calorie foods and stay slim. Others gain weight on 700 calories. But obesity does not appear to be just a thyroid problem. The real culprit is high levels of insulin. A diet that includes refined carbohydrates (white flour and sugar) is known to raise blood sugar levels in many people. Insulin levels must then go up to try to deal with the excess blood sugar. Eventually, the person may become insulin resistant, and normal levels of insulin are no longer able to control blood sugar levels. Now the pancreas produces excess insulin when any carbohydrate foods are eaten, and insulin levels are higher than normal. And we know that most overweight people do produce too much insulin. Insulin is a storage hormone. Above normal insulin levels get you at least four ways. First, excess insulin forces blood sugar into storage as fat. Second, excess insulin prevents the utilization of stored fat for energy. Third, excess insulin can increase hunger. Fourth, high levels of insulin are also associated with coronary artery disease. You have probably figured out by now that an abnormally high level of insulin is not in your best interests! Dr. Barry Sears has researched the insulin problem, and has come up with a program that lowers insulin levels by using a specific ratio of protein to carbohydrate. For a fuller account of his research, see his book Enter the Zone. (Note: If you are a diabetic, are pregnant, or are being treated for any serious illness, you should consult your physician before making dietary changes.) Find out your lean body weight. Enter the Zone tells how to do this. If you do not have the book, use your approximate ideal weight. Figure out how much protein you need per day. Take your lean body weight (or your approximate ideal weight if you don't know your lean weight) and multiply it by 0.0714 if you are sedentary, by 0.0857 if you walk some, by 0.1 if you exercise for 30 minutes 3 times a week, and by 0.114 if you exercise an hour a day, 5 times a week. Round this number off to the nearest whole number to give you the number of protein units you need per day. One protein unit is one ounce of lean meat or cheese, one large egg, one and one-half ounces of fish, one cup of milk, one-half cup of yogurt or one-half cup of cooked dried beans, split peas or lentils. (Each protein unit actually has about 7 grams of protein.) Add one unit (actually 9 grams) of carbohydrate to your daily requirement for each protein unit. Best carbohydrate units are: One cup of cooked non-starchy vegetables, one-fourth cup of cooked dried beans, split peas or lentils, one-half cup cooked onions, two cups of raw non-starchy vegetables, one cup of tomatoes, one-half cup of unsweetened fruit, or one-third cup of cooked oatmeal. Some carbohydrate units that can be used less often are one-fourth cup of winter squash or corn, one-third cup peas or potatoes, one-half cup cooked carrots, one-third of a banana, one-fourth cup of fruit juice, one-half slice of whole- grain bread, one-fourth cup of whole-grain pasta, one-fourth pita pocket, two cups of popcorn, one-fifth cup of rice, one rice cake, or one-half tablespoon of honey. For a lot more ideas, buy the book or a carbohydrate gram counter. Add one unit of fat (1.5 grams) for each protein unit. There are many possibilities, but a few are one-third teaspoon of oil or butter, one-half teaspoon of nut butter, two tablespoons of avocado, or three olives. This fat, by the way, is in addition to the fat that is in your other units. Do not eat large servings of protein or very large meals. Large servings of protein or any very large meal will raise insulin levels.

Acid/Alkaline Balance

Some think cancer and some other degenerative diseases are affected by a too-acid mantle, so raising pH to normal levels is desirable. Oxygen is absorbed more efficiently by the cells when the body is tending alkaline, however, alkalosis can be a problem just like acidosis although it is less common. One problem with tending toward acidosis is that the body will maintain blood pH in a narrow range at all costs. When it tends acid, calcium and other minerals are removed from the bones or organs to bring the pH up, and this can cause mineral deficiencies which can affect cellular respiration and nutrition, immune function, and contribute to mineral deposit formation. When it is too base, the kidneys merely excrete the extra minerals, which is no problem (unless there are renal problems.) This is one reason acidosis is much more common than alkalosis. The other reason is most people do not eat enough fruit and vegetables to compensate for all the grains and meats they consume.

The way to tell toward what one tends is to use nitrazine paper for a few mornings and see what the average pH is. It is usually used for urine, but will work with saliva, too. The ideal pH is around 6.0-6.5 for morning urine. Nitrazine is pH paper that gives an indication of the actual pH rather than litmus paper, which only tells greater or less than 7.0. It is expensive, and available at some pharmacies - call around or try for a full list of alkalizing supplements, testing strips and water treatment.

If the urine is too acid, the easiest solution is to use a mineral supplement, especially at night. The best one I have seen with the quickest action is Ecological Formula's Tri Salts, which is reagent quality calcium, magnesium, and potassium carbonates and bicarbonates. It immediately brings up the pH. However, this is not good in many cases if done long term.

Base form minerals like carbonates are not well absorbed by the body so even though the urine is basic, the body in general may not be. When taken with adequate magnesium, calcium carbonate or bicarbonates tend not to form stones or deposits as may be the case of supplementing just calcium carbonate, but it is not the best form to take regardless. Making the urine too base also makes it more likely to suffer a urinary tract infection. The Tri-Salts should really only be used when an immediate reaction is needed, or there is acid indigestion. The best calcium/magnesiums are chelated or combined with citrate to make the pH more neutral to the digestive tract, and since they are better absorbed, work better outside the digestive tract.

As far as adjusting the body pH up through dietary means, the best solution is to eat more fruits and vegetables and less grains and meats (however, the best diet for hormone balance is the Zone diet, and it requires that adequate protein and good oils be used to balance carbohydrates). The pH tendency of foods is not based on their acid content or taste, but on the mineral content. For example, lemons make the body alkaline and most bread makes it acid.

Base minerals (cal, mag, potassium, sodium) balance out acid minerals (sulfur, phosphorous, chlorine). Balance is best - don't try to overcompensate by eating only base fruits and vegetables since phosphorous, sulfur, and chlorine are also important to the body.

Phosphorous is contained in proteins and most grains. Proteins almost always also contain sulfur and little magnesium or calcium, so they are acid-forming foods. Some fish is less acid forming since they contain a decent amount of potassium (and maybe some calcium and magnesium) to balance out the acid minerals but most are quite acid forming. Most whole grains are not too bad (for this aspect) since they have a little calcium and some magnesium (in the hull) but refined flour, with the hull removed, is acid forming since most of the magnesium has been removed and there is nothing to balance all the phosphorous in the germ. Some nuts have a decent ratio of calcium/magnesium to phosphorous/sulfur, but they are almost all acid-forming except for almonds, with their high calcium and good magnesium content. Dairy products have calcium and potassium to balance the phosphorous and sulfur, so are not that bad in the acid forming respect (but take magnesium with the calcium). Rice and soy milk don't have calcium or magnesium or quite enough potassium to balance all the phosphorous unless they are calcium enriched, like Edensoy Extra. Fruits and vegetables usually lack the acid components, and can have a good amount of potassium and sodium and a few are good sources of calcium, so are generally base-forming. High content sulfur vegetables like cabbage, onions, and garlic are less base-forming.

The best way to ensure a balance is to just eat a serving or more of fruit or vegetables for every serving of protein or grain and take a cal-mag supplement and if using salt, use a potassium-rich one. This could be Morton's Lite Salt (a 1:1 ratio potassium sodium salt) or better yet a 3:1 mix of pure potassium chloride to Real Salt to get a potassium rich salt which contain trace minerals.

The following is an article posted by Richard Loyd that stresses the importance of balance.

 The pH Problem

It is thought by many that everyone has a never ending problem with acidity in their systems and that this is the main cause of disease. We must continually combat this problem by eating an "alkaline ash" diet, we are told. It is also thought by many that the urine pH is an accurate indicator of the pH of body fluids.

Alas, the situation is a bit more complicated than that. Those of us who do metabolic balancing are aware that many of our sickest people have body fluids that are very alkaline, and that respiratory rate and breath holding ability are key indicators of the pH of body fluids. A person with an acid imbalance will generally have a resting respiratory rate of 19 or more and if they take a deep breath will only be able to hold it for 40 seconds or less. Why? Because carbon dioxide is used by the body to regulate pH. If the body is acid, the brain tells the body to breathe faster to get rid of the acidic carbon dioxide. The same principle applies to breath hold. The brain says "breathe!" The urine pH may be acid. But if the acidosis is caused by excess potassium in the system, the kidneys will dump potassium and retain hydrogen. (Ain't evolution clever. If you believe that...) So the urine is alkaline while the body fluids are acid.

Alkalosis is the opposite. A person with alkalosis will generally have a respiratory rate of 13 or slower and a breath hold of 65 seconds or more. Urine pH is generally alkaline, except in potassium depletion alkalosis. In that case, the body retains potassium, and dumps hydrogen (acid), often making the urine acid while body fluids are alkaline!

Causes? Well, there is a metabolic acidosis and alkalosis, a respiratory acidosis and alkalosis, and pH problems caused by potassium imbalances as mentioned above.

There is also an acidosis caused by a glucogenic or fast oxidizer imbalance. Fast oxidation produces excess carbon dioxide and thus alkalosis. Slow oxidizers are the opposite.

Then there are the anabolic/anaerobic and catabolic/disaerobic imbalances. The anaerobic person generally has alkaline urine, high urine surface tension and acid saliva among other signs. Body fluids are alkaline and painful or diseased areas are acid. The body tends to use insufficient oxygen in metabolism so that instead of making carbon dioxide and water from glucose, the cells make lactic acid. Dr. Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize for proving that cancer is an anaerobic tissue.

The disaerobic person generally has acid urine, low urine surface tension, and alkaline saliva. Body fluids are acid, and painful or diseased areas are alkaline. Huge amounts of free radicals are generated by their metabolic processes.

Why do I crave Chocolate?

Because it tastes good! Seriously a little piece of chocolate every now and then is not harmful providing it is every now and then and not every day. Don't believe what they say about chocolate being a health food, it's not. You can get the health promoting benefits from other nutritious foods. Your chocolate cravings could mean you are deficient in some minerals, mainly magnesium. Magnesium deficiency is responsible for so many things on different levels from heart palpitations to constipation. If you have already been to The Ventura Center for Healing you know that we carry many types of magnesium. Find which one works best for your system.

Once you have achieved the virtual elimination of sugary foods from your diet, and we hope at this point you have made a valiant effort in doing so to promote your state of health, then you can try substituting unsweetened carob for chocolate. It is naturally sweet without any harmful sugar and unlike chocolate does not contain caffeine or other harmful substances. Have you been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes - also known as Adult Onset diabetes? Did you know that diabetes is the easiest "dis-ease" to reverse? Not convinced? You are not alone. Most people, especially those involved in mainstream medicine, do not believe that Type 2 diabetics can be helped without the use of pills or insulin. Fact is with diet, exercise and supplements you can reverse Type 2 diabetes. This does NOT mean you can throw out your pills/insulin tomorrow. It takes an all inclusive dedicated effort to slowly make these changes. First you have to educate yourself and find what works for you. Every person is different. Remember that there is no ONE answer for everyone. What works for 1 person may not work for another.

Personal update and Testimonial April 2006

Here is my personal update. I am the webmaster. My dear husband took a spur of the moment blood sugar test on November 30, 2005 that was so high it did not register on the blood sugar meter. We suspect it was in the 500-600 range. As someone who ALWAYS listened and followed my advice about what to eat, at least for the first 16 years we had been together, somehow he went "off track" these last 2 years. In spite of my admonishing him for eating the wrong food - and not by my doing, I serve healthy - he managed to overeat his way to an abnormally and dangerously high blood sugar level. Needless to say I panicked. Since my family had a history of diabetes, my paternal grandmother being an insulin dependent diabetic, I knew that if I didn't adopt a healthy eating pattern early in life I would end up like all of them, dead at 60..... or at 49 like my father. Since my blood sugar has always been in the 70-100 range I never worried about it and instinctively knew what to eat. Hubby on the other hand was out all day with clients and was tempted -  fries, burgers, pizza, burritos - just this little bit won't hurt. Well I guess after a couple of years of a little won't hurt, a whole lot of a little bit DID. That prompted me to research everything on diabetes, and I do mean everything. Since my brother-in-law went from taking pills to insulin and his type II diabetes was getting worse, my husband did not want to go that route. He made an appointment with a holistic doctor who took a series of tests and put him on a restricted blood specific diet along with herbs, supplements, holistic medicine and Acupuncture. And he followed all the advice from the books I had given him, especially Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. At first there wasn't much change, blood sugar readings were in the high 200's most of the time with a few 300's. He increased the time between meals to a minimum of 4 hours, per Dr. Bernstein's advice in the book, and added daily treadmill working his way up to 30 consecutive minutes. Along with the treadmill he started lifting weights again, another MUST according to Dr. Bernstein. After 6 weeks we finally saw a big improvement and the readings came down to the low 100's. But he still had episodes of it spiking for no reason. Morning readings they say are high anyway due to the dawn effect (4am-8am), your body normally producing insulin to get it ready for you to wake up. But hubby was persistent and kept up the exercise. He now felt stronger, wasn't as tired, didn't have to visit the bathroom nearly as much as before, wasn't thirsty all the time and the tingling in his feet was gone.

Well for the last couple of weeks, his blood sugar finally stopped spiking and morning readings are around 110. Before eating, or pre-prandial in diabetic talk, he is now in the 90-100 range and 2 hours post-prandial even after a sandwich or small dish of pasta he is around 110-120. Is he out of the woods now? No, he'll never be able to go back to the way he used to eat, never. Although he now can eat a bit more carbohydrates than the restricted 20-30 a day I had him on - per Dr. Bernstein's advice in the book. He has learned that he CAN have a couple of pieces of bread PER DAY MAX. He learned that he can never have a typical Mexican dinner every day - beans, rice, tortillas - only occasionally. When he does eat a high carb meal the rest of the day HAS to be low carb with lots of veggies. Someone like me, with low blood sugar can eat carbs all day and never have blood sugar over 100, while someone like my husband has to limit and monitor his daily intake of carbs.

So what does all this mean? It means that when someone tells you the body can't heal itself and you are nuts to try holistic or alternative medicine will you believe them? When they tell you something like diabetes or heart disease can't be reversed or cured, will you believe them? This is not the first time holistic has helped me or my family, but that will be another story at another time.

Water vs Coke

  1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
  2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
  3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
  4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
  5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
  6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
  7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
  8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

Are you drinking enough water daily?

  1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
  2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.
  3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid cleans out the stains. Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
  4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
  5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
  6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
  7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.
  8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

And Now, For Your Info - Yikes!!!!

  • The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8.
It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.

  • To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.

  • The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Detrimental Effects of Caffeine/Coffee

  • Dehydrates the body - especially large intestine/colon - must drink 5 ounces of water for every 1 ounce of caffeine consumed in effort to compensate. A dehydrated body is usually too acidic.

  • Blocks the absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc.

  • Creates constipation. The BM you think you had because of your cup of coffee actually stops the next BM from happening naturally.

  • Lowers adrenal function - can create adrenal burnout.

  • Lowers thyroid function.

  • Creates pituitary tumors, depresses pituitary function.

  • Increases kidney problems.

  • Creates iron deficiency.

  • Destroys the good bacteria in the gastro-intestinal tract.

  • Makes our system too acidic.

  • Impairs digestion.

  • Creates fibrocystic breast lumps in women.

  • It takes 32 glasses of purified water to counteract 1 can of coke.

Decaffeinated coffee is equally harmful. The process of decaffeination is achieved through the use of formaldehyde, an embalming agent. Thus, "decaffeinated" coffee not only contains some caffeine but includes numerous chemicals as well.

Do not exchange caffeinated tea for coffee. Instead, switch to an herbal tea. A good substitute for coffee is Raja's Cup.

Wash Off Your Packages from the Store!

Why would I want to do that? Please read all of the following:

A stock clerk was sent to clean up a storeroom in Maui, Hawaii. When he got back, he was complaining that the storeroom was really filthy and that he had noticed dried mouse or rat droppings in some areas.
A couple of days later, he started to feel like he was coming down with a stomach flu, complained of sore joints and headaches, and began to vomit.  He went to bed and never really got up again. Within two days he was severely ill and weak. His blood sugar count was down to 66, and his face and eyeballs were yellow. He was rushed to the emergency at Pali-Momi, where he was diagnosed to be suffering from massive organ failure. He died shortly before midnight.
No one would have made the connection between his job and his death, had it not been for a doctor who specifically asked if he had been in a warehouse or exposed to dried rat or mouse droppings at any time. They said there is a virus (much like the Hanta virus) that lives in dried rat and mouse droppings. Once dried, these droppings are like dust and can easily be breathed in or ingested if a person does not wear protective gear or fails to wash face and hands thoroughly.
An autopsy was performed on the clerk to verify the doctor's suspicions.
This is why it is extremely important to ALWAYS carefully rinse off the tops of canned sodas or foods, and to wipe off pasta packaging, cereal boxes, and so on.
Almost everything you buy in a supermarket was stored in a warehouse at one time or another, and stores themselves often have rodents.
Most of us remember to wash vegetables and fruits but never think of boxes and cans. The ugly truth is, even the most modern, upper-class, superstore has rats and mice.  And their warehouse most assuredly does!
Whenever you buy any canned soft drink, please make sure that you wash the top with running water and soap or, if that is not available, drink with a straw.
The investigation of soda cans by the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta discovered that the tops of soda cans can be encrusted with dried rat's urine, which is so toxic it can be lethal. Canned drinks and other foodstuffs are stored in warehouses and containers that are usually infested with Rodents, and then they get transported to retail outlets without being properly cleaned.

I am the webmaster for the Ventura Center for Healing. Someone has commented that the above story is an "urban legend". I can assure you that long before reading this story and putting it up on the website, I asked my mother-in-law why she always cleaned the top of her cans before she used them. She told me that one day she purchased soda from a market. Upon closer examination at home when putting her groceries away, she noticed rat or mice droppings on top of the cans. No, she did not have rodents in her house nor did the droppings appear during the trip home from the market.

We wash off our fruits and vegetables so why wouldn't we do the same with cans since the top, when opened, can come in contact with the food inside. Whether the above story about the stock clerk is true or not, no one knows exactly what is on top of that soda can or any can that has been stored in a warehouse.

Have you Been Diagnosed with Low Thyroid?

Approximately 27 million people in the United States have thyroid disease. Most of those diagnosed are hypothyroid or under-active thyroid.

What does this mean? It means that the thyroid gland, either through drugs, radiation, prolonged stress or removal of the thyroid gland, does not produce enough of the hormones thyroxine and triidothyronine.

The thyroid is the main gland responsible for controlling your metabolism. A thyroid that is not functioning properly can be responsible for high cholesterol, diabetes, overweight and adrenal fatigue just to name a few. It also plays a role in maintaining bone density with the secretion of a 3rd hormone, calcitonin, which inhibits bone resorption.

How can I tell if my thyroid gland is not working properly?
Low energy, mild depression, constipation, heavy periods, slow pulse and reflexes, a tendency towards feeling chilly and weight gain to name a few.

But I have been tested and the doctor said my thyroid is normal. Even though a standard blood test looks "normal" your thyroid may be somewhat underactive. Most doctors today rely heavily upon the blood test and base that on their diagnosis for whether or not you have thyroid disease. This is not always the case.

Please visit these links for more information about the Thyroid gland:

Foods to avoid if you have low thyroid:

Bamboo shoots, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, horseradish, kale, kohlrabi, lima beans, maize (corn), mustard, rutabaga, spinach, sweet potatoes, turnips and surprise CANOLA OIL.

apricots, almonds (this is debatable as there is conflicting information), cassava, cherries, millet, peaches, peanuts, pears, radishes, spinach, strawberries, soybeans and SOY PRODUCTS, tofu and walnuts.

These foods inhibit thyroid hormone production and should not be eaten if you have low thyroid. Even when cooked they still have the ability to inhibit. Some people can tolerate in small amounts, some can have cooked and others none at all. It is best to see how your own body reacts to certain foods. Keep a food diary and log your reaction. You may not have a reaction until the next day or subsequent days following the ingestion of certain foods.

Weston A. Price Foundation explains the dangers of soy and soy products.

Adrenal Fatigue

What exactly is adrenal fatigue? Adrenal fatigue is not recognized by conventional or mainstream medicine. Adrenal fatigue can be very debilitating and frustrating for someone when their doctor tells them that even though they feel tired all the time, can't get up in the morning, need caffeine and other stimulants to keep going, are always sick, have no sex drive and constantly feel stressed, that nothing is wrong. Some doctors even go so far as to say that it is the "in diagnosis these days".

If nothing is wrong why do I feel so bad? Conventional medicine will only recognize full blown Addison's Disease, when the adrenal glands have been completely burned out. Adrenal Fatigue or hypoadrenia is caused by constant prolonged stress or a series of stressful events like the death of someone close, serious auto accident, life changing events like divorce or moving, or serious illness. When these stressful events happen close to one another it does not give the body a chance to recover from the first event.

The adrenal glands help us during times of stress and produce critical hormones for the body to function. Without the adrenal glands we would not be able to function at all. If you have hypoadrenia, you most likely will have low thyroid. Both should be treated simultaneously giving first treatment to the adrenals to strengthen them, otherwise you may feel shaky, have palpitations and won't be able to sleep. Of course everyone has different symptoms and this is something serious so finding a holistic doctor to treat you is paramount.

Please visit this site for more information on Adrenal Fatigue: - Website of Dr. James L. Wilson, author of Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome, a must read for those with chronic fatigue.

Exercise to Beat Osteoporosis

I am sure you didn't want to hear this but the best thing you can do to prevent Osteoporosis and strengthen your bones is exercise. Especially walking, running and weight lifting. Weight lifting? But I don't want to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger! Don't worry, lifting weights won't make you look like a professional bodybuilder but it will keep you in shape by building muscle mass. Building muscle mass helps to strengthen your bones AND increase your metabolism which helps you lose weight. Now do I have your attention? We all want to lose weight but sometimes aerobic activity just isn't enough. Weight lifting, or anaerobic exercise, deprives the muscles of oxygen tiring them quickly and they require 19 times as much glucose to do the same amount of work as aerobic exercise.

But what does that have to do with Osteoporosis and my bones? People with high blood sugar tend to have Osteoporosis. So if you are sitting around watching the boob tube get off your bottom and start doing something. Bring your treadmill in front of the tv or better yet bring your weights and lift while you watch. You can incorporate many things into daily activities that help build muscle like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, doing squats and pushups while watching tv, doing leg lifts while in your chair. But don't let this take the place of a real workout, you need concentration for that but most of all you need to enjoy the type of exercise you are doing. So find something you enjoy and get moving.

Drugs given prior to colonoscopy linked to kidney failure

Certain bowel cleansing products used prior to colonoscopies are linked to chronic kidney failure, according the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. The JASN cited certain bowel-cleansing products containing sodium phosphate are an un-recognized cause of chronic kidney failure in the Unites States. Common bowel-cleansing drugs that include sodium phosphate are Visocol, an oral prescription drug and another non-prescription product called Fleet Phospho-soda.

Researchers cite several potential factors that may contribute to the development of kidney problems from sodium phosphate bowel-cleansing agents, including inadequate hydration while receiving the drug, history of high blood pressure and the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

So what do I do now? Here is what you can do to prepare for your next colonoscopy in lieu of taking the bowel cleansing products the hospital or doctor will give you.

The following is not intended  to diagnose any physical condition, or to prescribe or promote any particular product or products. It is not intended as a substitute for the advice and treatment by a licensed medical professional so please check with your doctor first and voice your concerns about the bowel cleansing products.

Two (2) days prior to your colonoscopy do not eat ANYTHING that is not clear or see through. In other words if you can't see through it, don't eat or drink it. Things like clear chicken broth, yellow and light green jello, and apple juice with NO pulp may be eaten. Anything that will color the bowel walls or look like black specks have to be avoided, otherwise it will skew the test. This may be a good time for a light fast and a colonic.

Cholesterol: How low is too low?

Ever notice that the target total cholesterol level is getting lower and lower these days? And why not, with all the cholesterol lowering drugs on the market today one must wonder what the real story behind those numbers really mean. Who decides what the new normal is? The drug companies are the ones who fund the research so can you trust them?

It used to be that 220 was considered a good total cholesterol reading. Not anymore. The drug companies have us believing that a total cholesterol of 180 or under should be our goal. That kind of thinking is dangerous. Your body makes and needs cholesterol, especially for the hormones to function at the optimal level. A cholesterol level that is too low poses a whole host of health concerns including depression, aggression, stroke, anxiety and even suicide. Dramatic? Not really, not any more dramatic than the ads for the cholesterol lowering Statin drugs on the market that we are bombarded with every day.

The side effects of Statin drugs far outweigh their benefits. In fact, Statin drugs are known to cause liver damage by inhibiting the enzymes the liver makes when your body produces too much insulin. TOO MUCH INSULIN. Where did you hear that before. What are you doing that causes the body to produce too much insulin. That's right, too much sugar, refined grains and processed foods. Elevated levels of insulin is the main cause of high cholesterol. Research has shown that eating food with cholesterol only marginally affects the blood cholesterol level -  80 to 85% of our cholesterol is made by the liver from sugar, while only 15 to 20% is synthesized from dietary fats.

Here are some things you should first do to lower your cholesterol levels:

  • Exercise at least 20-30 minutes 3-4 times a week. Walking around your office or home all day does NOT count as exercise. You need to work up a sweat and do it continuously for that period of time for it to be effective.

  • Eliminate sugar and lower your grain intake.

  • Increase your intake of vegetables and fiber.

Fungus in your food

So what's a little fungus among us? Fungus here, fungus there, fungus everywhere. Literally fungus IS everywhere. It's in the soil, the air we breathe, at home in our carpets and yes - in our food. But just how much harms the body is as individual as the type of food and amount of food each of us eats every day.

Some people have strong immune systems and are not bothered by fungus, mold or yeast in our food at all. Others with weakened immune systems are effected at different levels.

But I can't see the fungus in the food, where is it?

Most fungus found in food can't be seen with the naked eye. It becomes obvious when you can see little green specs in old bread and other food that has been stored in the refrigerator.

So what can a person do to eliminate fungus in their food?

Start by eliminating the suspected food that harbors the mold to begin with. Here is list of foods to avoid You'll think twice about storing leftovers now won't you!

Words of Encouragement

Changing old patterns is not easy, if it were everyone would be doing it. You have to make it so important in your life that you are willing to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to be healthy. This takes considerable time and effort on your part because you can't leave it up to someone else to guard your health. Be your own doctor. Investigate, learn everything you can about your disease or trouble you are having. Don't give up and.........

Don't let the naysayer's get you down! The internet is loaded with helpful information about alternative, holistic and homeopathic remedies. It is also rife with negative information about it too. Some people refuse to believe that something other than drugs and someone that does not have an MD after their name can help you. This just isn't so. There are so many pioneers of Alternative Healing that the holistic community would not be the same without them. Here are a few people you should know about:

Professor Arnold Ehret author of Rational Fasting and Mucusless Diet Healing System. Professor Ehret, born in 1866, was diagnosed with Bright's Disease at the age of 31 or what doctors today call glomerulonephritis, a type of Kidney Disease. Over the next 5 years he saw 24 doctors, all who pronounced him incurable. Professor Ehret went on to find his own cure, fasting. Read more about this pioneer in the health field at Arnold Ehret Health Club website.

Paul Bragg, ND, PhD health crusader and inspiration to Jack LaLanne, America's fitness guru. No doubt you've seen Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar on health food store shelves everywhere. But did you know that this health crusader was once a sickly teenager who was crippled by tuberculosis? Paul Bragg went on to develop his own eating, breathing and exercise program to rebuild his diseased body. He and his daughter Patricia Bragg are authors of numerous health books including Apple Cider Vinegar Miracle Healing System, The Miracle of Fasting and The Shocking Truth About Water. Visit the Bragg site for more information.

Dr. John R. Christopher, MH, America's foremost herbalist, was born in 1909 with crippling rheumatoid arthritis.  Doctors said he would not live beyond the age of 30 but he proved them wrong by curing himself of cancer using natural methods and living until the age of 73 when he died of complications from a head injury. Dr. Christopher went on to create more than fifty herbal formulas that have exacted almost miraculous healings and founder of The School of Natural Healing. He is the author of several books including The Incurables and Dr. Christopher's Three-Day Cleansing Program and Mucusless Diet. Dr. Randolph Stone, DO, DC, DN, founder of Polarity Therapy, maintained a practice in Chicago for over 50 years. He was best known for working with "hopeless cases" who often responded to his unconventional approaches which he incorporated from techniques he learned from around the world. During the 1950's he tried to get the medical community to accept his ideas but times were rapidly changing and surgery and drugs were at the forefront. Nevertheless, his ideas soon caught the attention of the 1960's generation and he lectured on holistic health and polarity therapy. Dr. Stone is author of many books including Health-Building, the Conscious Art of Living Well. Positive Mind Patterns (taken from Health Building, the Conscious Art of Living Well by Dr. Randolph Stone)

To have health we must have it in the mind as an ideal pattern and an objective to work for and lay out our days work and habits in line with that blueprint of heath and life in action of doing and being as we want to be.

Then these patterns will attract the positive particles of space energy and fill the patterns of cells and tissue formation with life's ions as we live, breathe and think in terms of love and life as our reality and heritage. We will become that which we contemplate.

Negative thoughts and fears attract negative space ions to build into our mind space as negative thought waves and negative energy waves of feelings of despondency and hopelessness. All this because we have discarded the positive pattern of life as our ideal.... We cannot think negative thoughts and reap positive results. If we really want health we must be willing to work for it.
